Johnny Cash (1932-2003) zong een aangrijpend, somber lied over de Man in black – zichzelf. Zijn landgenoot Mark Twain (1835-1910) was misschien ook somber, maar hij koos de tegenovergestelde oplossing. Hij droeg in de laatste jaren van zijn leven in het openbaar witte pakken.
